BIS Certification for Sodium Bicarbonate IS 2124

Sodium Bicarbonate

Sodium Bicarbonate or baking soda is a widespread chemical that finds application in food processing, pharmaceutical, chemical production, fire suppressants, clothing, water purification and cleaning. The purity and composition are essential with particular reference to human consumption or sensitive industrial use.

The BIS Certification for Sodium Bicarbonate comes under the IS 2124 which prescribes the quality and purity and safety and performance as well. The licensing of BIS maintains that sodium bicarbonate produced, sold or imported in India meets prescribed Indian Standards and is fit to be used in the intended use.

What does BIS Certification mean?

The ISI Mark Certification is also a certification that is granted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). In the case of Sodium Bicarbonate, the ISI mark in IS 2124 indicates that the product has been tested in BIS-recognized labs and that the production plant has been inspected in the BIS factory.

BIS also carries out regular audits and product surveillance to maintain uniformity in raw materials, processing controls, purity as well as packaging. Indian manufacturers of foods and pharmaceutical companies as well as industrial purchasers strongly believe in ISI-certified sodium bicarbonate.

The benefits of ISI Mark Compliance for manufacturers

The major benefits of ISI Mark Certification for Sodium Bicarbonate are:

  1. Assurance of Quality and Purity Checks compliance with specified levels of purity and chemical composition.
  2. Regulatory Compliance : Legal manufacture, sale, and import under Quality Control Orders.
  3. Market Acceptance : Favored by controlled industries like food, pharmaceutical and chemical processing.
  4. Consumer Safety : Eliminates the risks of impurities and contaminants.
  5. Brand Credibility : Improves confidence using BIS and ISI certification.

Key technical parameters of IS 2124

The set of technical and quality requirements provided in IS 2124 make sure that sodium bicarbonate is safe and fit to use. Key parameters include:

  • Purity and sodium bicarbonate content
  • pH value of aqueous solution
  • Loss on drying
  • Insoluble matter limits
  • Chloride and sulphate content
  • Heavy metals and toxic impurity limits
  • Particle size and appearance
  • Packing, marking, and labeling requirements

Sodium bicarbonate that satisfies these parameters only has the privilege to be certified as BIS and ISI marked.
