BIS Certification for Iron Oxide Pigments for Paints IS 44

Iron Oxide Pigments For Paints

Iron Oxide Pigments find widespread applications in paints, coatings, construction materials, plastics, and decorative finishes because it has a great colour stability, opacity, weather resistance and chemical inertness. These pigments are offered in different colors like red, yellow, black and brown that are appreciated in decorative and protective uses.

The BIS Certification for Iron Oxide Pigments used in Paints under IS 44 assures the pigments to the Indian Standards in terms of chemical composition, color consistency, fineness, dispersion and performance. The BIS License is a statement that iron oxide pigments are safe, stable and can be used in paints formulations.

What is an ISI Mark Certification?

The ISI Mark Certification, a mark awarded by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is used to show compliance to Indian Standards on a product by testing, inspecting a factory, and providing surveillance.

In the case of Iron Oxide Pigments in paints, the ISI Mark under IS 44 confirms that the pigments are not only tested in BIS-recognized laboratories but they are also produced under controlled quality systems. BIS performs periodic factory checks to maintain consistency in raw materials, manufacturing process and the quality of the end-product.

ISI Mark Compliance Advantages

The significant advantages of ISI Certification for Iron Oxide Pigments are:

  1. Stability & Color Consistency Guarantees consistency of shade, tinting force and fading resistance.
  2. Regulatory Compliance : Allows legal manufacture, sale, and import on notified QCOs.
  3. Competitive Advantage : Enhances institutional procurement and long term supply contracts.
  4. Market Acceptance : Paint manufacturers and government buyers prefer pigments that are ISI-marked.
  5. Performance Reliability : Offers uniform dispersion, opaque properties and resistance to weather.

Technical specification of IS 44

IS 44 is a quality and performance standard that applies to Iron Oxide Pigment to be used in paints.

The most important technical parameters are:

  • Iron oxide content
  • Shade and color consistency
  • Fineness and particle size distribution.
  • Oil absorption value
  • Moisture content
  • pH value of aqueous extract
  • Water-soluble matter
  • Loss on ignition
  • Tinting strength
  • Light and weather resistance.
  • Requirements for packing, marking and labeling.

All Paints Iron Oxide Pigments in India should be based on IS 44 and must carry an ISI Mark in case of successful BIS certification.
