BIS Certification for Asbestos Cement Roofing Fittings IS 1626 (Part 3)

Asbestos Cement Roofing Fittings

Asbestos Cement Roofing Fittings: These are necessary fittings of asbestos cement roofing systems that are used as ridges, corner fittings and closures. These fittings are essential in the weather protection, structural stability and performance of the roofing in general.

BIS Certification for Asbestos Cement Roofing Fittings as per IS 1626 (Part 3) is done to verify that the fittings are in compliance with the prescribed Indian Standards of strength, durability, dimensional and weather resistance. The ISI mark indicates that the products can be used in the residential, industrial and agricultural roofing applications.

Introduction to ISI Mark Certification

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) awards the ISI Mark Certification that shows the compliance with the applicable Indian Standards by testing the product, inspecting the factory, and performing constant follow-up. In the case of asbestos cement roofing fittings, BIS certification ensures that the fittings meet the requirements of the IS 1626 (Part 3).

BIS Certified manufacturers undergo regular checks and samples testing to maintain constant quality and controlled production and conformity to safety and performance standards. The use of ISI-marked roofing fittings is very common in construction endeavors in India.

Key advantages of ISI Mark Compliance

  1. Regulatory Compliance  Permits legal production and sale, based on reported BIS standards.
  2. Structural Reliability :  This is to ensure that fittings are of sufficient strength and durability to be used on roofing.
  3. Market Acceptance : Favored by the contractors, government construction projects and the builders.
  4. Tender Eligibility :  It allows one to participate in public sector and infrastructure tenders.
  5. Brand Credibility :  Builds on confidence between consumers, design engineers and regulators.

Overview of IS 1626 (Part 3)

IS 1626 (Part 3) is significant because it makes asbestos cement roofing fittings safe, performing, and durable in the long-term. The standard provides composition requirements of asbestos fiber and cement content that can be used to provide uniformity and strength.

It stipulates dimensions, tolerances, and shape accuracy in order to fit well into roofing sheets. Transverse breaking load, water absorption and weather resistance tests are prescriptive tests that are carried out to check performance under service conditions. Surface finish, curing, marking, packing, and ISI labeling provisions assure durability, traceability and regulatory compliance.
